Off the grid means:
Not dependent on public utilities, especially the supply of electricity.
Since moving almost two weeks ago there has been a major change in my life.
As you can tell from the title, Off the Grid, and by the lack of writing, I have no internet.
This is a major change for me.
Going from always having internet, or a connection to people, being a blogger, and working with computers all day everyday to nothing.
Is difficult.
I grew up in the 90's where cell phones were just coming into use, you stayed out until the lights on the streets came on, and you used walkie talkie to talk to your friends.
As time went on flip phones, Razors, dial-up, and AOL came around.
Now you can have service on your wrist, Bluetooth in your car, and WiFi at your finger tips.
However, since most of my neighbors are Amish, those things above are now a thing of the 80's.
Don't get me wrong, it has been liberating in the evening to not have a computer, stalking people on Facebook, or the need to be always connected to the people around you.
I grew up with a pen pal in Colorado and believe it or not, still have all of the letters that we wrote back and forth.
I am a big fan of pen and paper, until you have to blog about travel, and all of the other aspects of my life.
Reading how others survive traveling the world with no internet connection has given me hope that I too will be able to make this work.
Deciding that on Friday's I will spend my day writing what travel or adventure we are working on and then finding a nice coffee shop to sit in and upload my piece that way.
Not the most ideal way of doing a blog, or my life, but I think that it will work out until, well...
it will just have to work itself out.
The reason i bring all of this up is due to the fact, lie I said earlier, my neighbors are Amish.
Growing up where Amish were, but never really seen, unless you go to the local bakery to get doughnuts or Suzy Q's, need something built, or trying to find some of the best produce that is ever so fresh. When you hear the hooves of the horses coming down the street you do get excited.
Right now it is harvest time for Alfalfa. They will come down our street early early morning to start cutting, then come back around lunch time, to only turn around and go back to the field until almost dark.
Everyone is involved, children, teens, and adults; all of these people come together to make sure that the homestead is operating the way it should.
You can drive by and see the little kids helping in the garden, the boys helping the men in the field, the older women doing the laundry, some tending to the animals they have.
I have always been amazed at how they can survive the way they do.
Now, that I don't have service or internet all of the time I find myself doing more things outside and living in the moment and making the memories instead of living in someones life online.
Sitting out on the pouch reading a book, playing catch with the dog, watching traffic go by, and taking in all of the animals that now inhabit my yard.
Baby birds now wake me up at the crack of down instead of the sound of sirens, people drop by instead of having to make a day trip to see us, seeing the rabbits outside running, these are the things that I would never see with my head looking into my phone.
Life has a funny way of making you slow down and making you appreciate the life that you are living.
We need to start living OUR life as the Amish do.
Use everything you have, take nothing for granted, and work hard, but play even harder.
When I started this blog, I thought, man this is going to be hard to do.
I had no idea what was going to happen to make it more of a challenge, but what I did know was that I would not stop for anything or anyone.
This is my life, adventure, and my travels.
I am not fully off of the grid, but at the same time, it feels like that.
In just those few short weeks I have had more adventures than I have had since Europe.
Follow along and let me tell you the stories of my new life, adventures, and travels that I have planned for this next year!
You never know what might happen, what you might learn, or what you will be able to see on here.
I will still be cooking up all of the sweet and hearty meals that I have been and will be trying some new recipes that I have been working on!
Come along for the new Sweet Travels and Food Adventure!
Remember to click follow on Instagram in the corner for sneak peek of what is going on!
Nice blog. Enjoy the adventures. Hope I get to be a part of some of them.
