Home Sweet Home

Home.
There is no place like home.

I have repeated this saying to myself over the last almost seven years since I have been away.
I have foud that when you are gone from that one place for so long and then you come back it feels like a vacation.

Going home only twice a year maybe three times, things change.
The town that I grew up in was right on the Ohio River.
Gallipolis was a city when I was there, but has since been down graded to a village with just a little over 3,600 people living there.

The town itself is packed full of history, you just have to look for it.
Mound Hill Cemetery is one of those places that is packed full of history.
Given the fact that it is a cemetery many would not go there unless there were family or friends there.
If you are looking to visit someone "famous" you can go and see where Mr. Bob Evans is buried.
Mr. Bob Evans was born as Robert Lewis "Bob" Evans and started the restaurant in Gallipolis, which was a 12-stool diner.  Now the restaurant has grown to over 600 locations in 19 different states.
If you go to one of these restaurants look at the wall and just think about that!
If you go to Mound Hill Cemetery he has one of the best views of Gallipolis and the Ohio River.

Another place at the Mound Hill Cemetery that many do not know about is a gravestone with the last name of Thompson.
During the prohibition they would hide the alcohol in the doors of the headstone.
The people that bought would come back and get it the next day.
These are the things that people don't know that live in the area.

Over the years the town keeps growing.
There was a building that burnt down, now there is a frozen yogurt store in it's location.
Pip & Hud's is a nice little place, family owned, and named after their children.
You can get the frozen yogurt or gourmet popcorn.
While it is expensive it is a nice place to go on a date or just to visit.

In the same location there is a shop in the area strip, there is a store that has local artist that bring homemade items.
Cards, paintings, scarves, and woodworking items.
The Artisan Shoppe & Studio is something that needs to be checked out.
Everything is one of a kind and make great gifts.
The ladies that run the store a very nice, great you with a smile, and help you with what you need right away.
The studio has classes that you can take with the artists that have their items in the store.
I was able to get a few items while I was there and bring back with me.
A few cards from Park Avenue Cards & Creations and a small crocheted hat.
For more information about the Park Avenue Cards & Creations there here is an interview that was done.
Rio Grande Cable Access has all kinds of locals on the channel and what there is around the area.

All over Gallipolis there are places to go and things to see.
The park has always been a hangout spot for high school students and for adults that want to just watch the Ohio River.
The band stand in the center of the park has been a location for pictures along with the fountain
.
This part of Ohio will always hold a special place in my heart.
I have friends that are still here and family still around.
This place is always beautiful, but more so in the fall.
The leaves change, the sunset glows on the river, and everything around is crisp.

The weekend that I went the leaves weren't all changed, but starting too.

The sunset hit the water in the most perfect way, and made me feel like I had never left.

Home sweet home.
